What is a Powertrain Warranty?

When you buy a new car, it will usually come with a few warranties for different parts of your car, including what’s called a powertrain warranty. But what is a powertrain warranty, and what exactly does it cover? If you encounter any issues with your powertrain, bring your vehicle in for service at Titus-Will Ford in Tacoma, WA.

What parts does a powertrain warranty cover?

A powertrain warranty covers the parts of the powertrain, or the parts responsible for making the car move. These typically include the engine, transmission, and drivetrain. The engine generates power, while the transmission shifts between gears at different speeds to determine how much power is needed, and the drivetrain delivers power from the engine to the wheels.

Several parts may make up the drivetrain, including the transfer case, drive shafts, axles, differentials, and the front-, all-, rear-, or four-wheel drive system. Ford’s powertrain warranty covers all of these parts in addition to the engine and transmission.

How long does it last and what is it used for?

Like most warranties, the powertrain warranty runs out when the car reaches a certain age or mileage, whichever comes first. In Ford’s case, the powertrain warranty lasts 5 years or 60,000 miles. Powertrain warranties are usually the longest-lasting warranty on a new car.

If there are any defects discovered on any of the parts the warranty covers within the age and mileage limits, the manufacturer will take care of the cost of repair. The dealership will take care of fixing parts that are damaged or have stopped working when it is not due to driver error.

The warranty does not cover the battery, parts damaged in collisions, or normal wear and tear, so the owner is responsible for the cost of replacing parts that are worn from use. The warranty also doesn’t cover oil changes and other regular maintenance.

Are they only available on new cars?

Typically powertrain warranties only come with new cars, but if you go through Ford’s Certified Pre-Owned program, you’ll get a 7-year or 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty included with your purchase. This warranty is transferrable to future owners, covers the engine and transmission, and includes 24-Hour Roadside Assistance.
