2017 Ford Explorer vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee: Design

Whereas the Grand Cherokee still clings to the tired, boxy Jeep look, the sleek 2017 Ford Explorer features a bold, modern sculpt and attractive lines. On the exterior of the Explorer, you'll find standard features such as painted alloy wheels and all-season tires that the Grand Cherokee can't match at the base trim level. Climb inside the Explorer and you'll find standard power seats at the base trim level and options such as premium leather upholstery and turn-by-turn navigation that, once again, the Grand Cherokee can't match. You also get more front head room, front hip room, front leg room, front shoulder room, rear hip room, rear head room, rear leg room and rear shoulder room in the 2017 Ford Explorer than you do in the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

2017 Ford Explorer vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee: Performance

At the base trim level, both the 2017 Explorer and the Grand Cherokee are powered by similarly-sized V6 engines. Both SUVs also offer turbocharged options as you go up in trim level. Where the Explorer excels is in stability and traction, offering front-wheel drive as the default powertrain vs. Jeep's rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available as an option at upper trim levels of the Explorer while the Grand Cherokee can be equipped with 4-wheel drive.

2017 Ford Explorer vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee: Safety

You'll find similar standard safety features in both the 2017 Explorer and the Grand Cherokee including antilock brakes, multiple airbags, a rearview camera, stability control and traction control.
